AND...for further clarification, despite the thread title, I see this far less about politics, than i do aboput personal opinions.

adn if at any point you have any questions WHY reason might come across as militant...I think he spelled it put pretty damned clearly:

People like this threaten my means of supporting myself. They threaten the means of supporting the basics in life.

I didn't see the toddler, but the young woman assured me this two year old went running away unattended.

I walked around the play area, and sure enough, over a hundred feet away running at full clip was the cutest little girl heading to who knows where.

Y'know, I actually found myself thinking twice. I found myself afraid to go fetch the little girl. I was afraid what might happen when seen chasing down a little girl who wasn't mine. I was afraid I might be accused of who knows what.

Out of habit, I limit my exposure to children, particularly ones around puberty. Kind of a self preservation thing. I would never do anything inappropriate, but I'd never want my friendly nature to be misinterpreted, either.

This all might sound nutty, but it's a reality of my life.

I guess that sounds like I'm portraying myself as a victim. I don't look at it that way; rather, I view it as a necessary evil and a part of life. I make adjustments. Always making adjustments.

I mean what I say here. While I do have a fault with a short temper, I make no apologies for being blunt.

Y'know, sometimes y'just feel like fighting back. So I do. I'm as fit to be around your kids as the best guy. Tell me otherwise, I'm going to kick your ass.

would it surprise you to know that I too would have wrestled with the situation much the same as you. However, as a mother, reason would have overridden, and i wouild have gotten that little girl to the nearest security agent...and then worried like mad that I could have gotten in trouble, just as you thought.

And for the record...I'd rather have you around my girls (or sons, if I had them) than many of the same people I encounter day to day...gay or straight.

Call me a fag hag...but i have often pionted out that there are many a homosexual who make better humans than the straightest among us.

very sweet, Sean. Your son is a doll...and frankly makes more sense than SOME people around here.

Please, if i may...I'd like to take a stab at adressing this from Steve's point of view. through some other boards I use, I am very familiar with the tactic of overblowing a viewpoint, in the hopes that at least one person will "get" what it's about. My guess here, (and please correct me if I'm wrong), is that much of this stems from the every day perception that it is not OKAY for Steve to be who he is. You and I can talk with impunity about our partners. we can take them to work functions, or simply go out with them at night, and noone cares a whit. but, in Steve's case, and for many of his friends, they have to hide a huge part of who they are, and quite frankly, act to be soemthing they aren't, for the abject fear that the LAKES of the corporate world will decide that they are unfit for their corporate postion, and not only fire them, but get the word out there, and Steve finds him self black balled, trying to find a new job.

Fear like that would turn me militant to say the least. And yeah, I would probably say things that weren't too popular. But self preservation will do that to a person.

    JDF,

I'm sure some of your earlier posts were directed at me. I'd like to explain my position to you because I believe you are reasonable, unlike a certain other poster.

    1. I would have no problem with a single mom teaching my kids. As a matter of fact, one of my sons had a single mom teacher the last half of last school year. I would have a problem with an unmarried teacher (where the kids all know she's not married) turning up pregnant mid-year. It would be a distraction and knowing how kids are, they'd be giggling behind her back. How can kids learn from someone they're laughing at? Of course I would use the opportunity to talk to my kids about responsibility. I've thought about this since my first post and I'd more than likely NOT pull my kids out right away, but see how the situation progressed.

    2. I totally stand by my other comment.
I don't totally disagree with DeMint's stand on the gay teachers either. I see no reason why the students need to know their teacher's orientation. Unless the class he/she teaches is about sexual orientation, it shouldn't be an issue.
The teacher's job is to teach the subject they're hired to do. If the gay teacher uses the class time to rant on his personal issues, I would have a huge problem with it. Same as if the teacher would go on about pro-choice or pro-life matters in an art class. I don't want my kids' teachers trying to shove their politics down their throat. My comment wasn't just about a gay teacher, that just happens to be the topic of the article reason posted.

reason, don't even bother. I've got your number.
